Asakusa Kimono Walk: A Model Course from a Shop 3 Minutes from Senso-ji

Asakusa is one of the best places in Tokyo to walk around in a kimono. Senso-ji Temple, Nakamise Street and the other main sights are all within a few minutes on foot of each other, so the route is easy even if it is your first time in a kimono. This guide introduces a model walking course that starts from Rental Kimono AYAKA, a 3-minute walk from Senso-ji.

Asakusa kimono walking course (about 2 to 3 hours)

Every stop is a few minutes on foot from the shop. Even at a relaxed pace with plenty of photo stops, half a day is more than enough.

1. Get dressed at Rental Kimono AYAKA

Start by choosing your kimono at the shop, then our staff will dress you and style your hair. Dressing takes about 30 to 40 minutes for women and 15 to 20 minutes for men. Everything you need is included in the plan, so you can come empty-handed, and we store your clothes and bags at the shop.

2. Sumida Park (about 2 minutes from the shop)

A riverside park along the Sumida River where you can take photos with Tokyo Skytree in the background. It is usually less crowded, which makes it a good first photo spot while you get used to walking in a kimono.

3. Kaminarimon Gate (about 3 minutes)

The symbol of Asakusa, famous for its giant lantern. From the observation terrace of the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center across the street, you can look down on Nakamise Street and Senso-ji.

4. Nakamise Street (about 3 minutes)

The shopping street that leads from Kaminarimon to Senso-ji, lined with shops selling Japanese accessories and traditional sweets. When it is crowded, walk slowly so your sleeves and hem do not get caught.

5. Senso-ji Temple (about 3 minutes)

The main hall, the five-story pagoda and Hozomon Gate are all classic backdrops for kimono photos. After visiting the temple, drawing an omikuji fortune is a popular tradition.

6. Denboin Street

Just west of Senso-ji, this street recreates the look of an Edo-period town. The signs and buildings go very well with a kimono.

7. Return to the shop by 5:30 PM

Please return your kimono to the shop by 5:30 PM on the same day. If you have extra time, you can also walk toward Tokyo Skytree, about 20 minutes on foot from the shop.

Tips for walking comfortably in a kimono

  • Take small steps. On stairs, lift the hem slightly to make walking easier.
  • In summer, wear light innerwear such as a tank top. In winter, wear warm layers such as Heattech shirts or leggings. Avoid high-neck innerwear.
  • We store your belongings (except valuables) at the shop, so you can explore with just a small bag.
  • During busy seasons there may be a wait for dressing. Booking an early time slot is recommended.

Experiences to add to your walk

You can also add a kimono photoshoot with a professional photographer, or cultural experiences such as a rickshaw ride or chopstick making.
